Design: Top Ten Christmas Decorations...

Hello I'm Brooke Jones from the Modern Sophisticate Blog & also an Interior Design contributor here at Made By Girl!

Top 10 Christmas Decorations (That May or May Not Be Christmas Decorations) Let's face it, Christmas decorating can get expensive.  From garlands, to ornaments, to tree skirts, to lights, the final tally can really add up. Even worse, the decorations you are investing in can only be seen for less than 1/6 of the year!  I would much rather invest in a pretty piece that can be construed as "festive" during the holidays yet "chic" and "glamorous" the rest of the year.

Here's an idea......Instead of a tree skirt, why not buy a foxy fur throw to wrap around the base of your tree in December then drape it across the foot of your bed in January?

Or how about gilded leaf trays to hold simple tea lights through New Years then use them to drop your keys and change in for the remainder of the year?

Gift for Coffee Lovers....

I don't know about you, but I love cappuccino. The foamier, the better!

I'm also a tea drinker but coffee takes the top spot for me.  This Holiday season, automatic/semi-automatic espresso makers are ideal gifts for coffee lovers! Below are 4 of my picks!

I already own #4 - the Tassimo, which works fantastic & with T-discs, but I'd love another one...maybe a more powerful machine this time around!

And you? Do you have a cappuccino machine you love & would recommend for the Holidays??

By the way, did you know you can make cappuccino with COCONUT MILK!??? Coconut milk has half the calories & sugar as regular milk. Check it out here.

Book Review: VOGUE, The Covers

When I think Vogue, I think the height of stylish fashion - perfect dresses perfectly staged on perfect models. So when I received Vogue, The Covers from the people at Abrams, it was like getting the best part of over 100 years of Vogue magazine in one shot! Seriously....!

Vogue, The Covers by Dodie Kazanjian is just that - an illustrated photo book of nearly every Vogue cover from 1892 through 2010.

Covers by famous photogs - Helmut Newton, Bruce Weber, Richard Avedon, Herb Ritts, Annie Leibowitz - they're all here.  Side-by-side it's so easy to see the rise and fall of trends in fashion, style, and photography.

One of the neatest things is that I actually have some of these very magazines (yes, I admit, I have a few buried in the back of the closet).

Of course I have the Madonna covers, and the 100th Anniversary issue from 1992 featuring the supermodels in white. Vogue, The Covers has 269 pages with 500 full color photos and illustrations. The $50 book even comes with five frameable prints.

This book is awesome! Get your copy here.

Food: Key Lime Biscotti & White Chocolate...

Hi I'm Heather Freeman from The Lovely Cupboard blog, contributing here at Made By Girl! I'm one of the Food Contributors & was wondering if you all needed something to kick off your holiday baking?

How about key lime biscotti with white chocolate drizzle?

If you've never attempted but always enjoyed the crunch of this Italian cookie, December is a great month to give it a try! Unlike souffles or macaroons that can be a bit "moody", you'll find biscotti turns out predictably well each time if the recipe is adhered to.

I've made several versions of biscotti, but this was my first time using key limes. Citrus & white chocolate always work well together, but I thought the green color made it especially festive.

Here's what you'll need to pick up at the store:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Rough chop the shelled pistachios.

2. In a large bowl combine 2 cups flour, 3/4 cup sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, a pinch of salt, and 2/3 cup chopped of nuts. Stir to combine.

3. In another bowl, add 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 3 tablespoons of melted butter, 3 tablespoons of key lime juice, and 1/2 teaspoon of key lime zest. Whisk together.**Optional** You could add a drop or two of green food coloring here to add hint of green.

4. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients bowl and mix using a rubber spatula. A rough dough will begin to form.

5. Transfer dough to a work surface and knead a few times until the dough begins to form together.

6. Split the dough into two sections. Form each section into a "log" that is about 1 inch high and 3 inches wide.

7. Transfer the logs onto a parchment paper lined cookie sheet. Flatten slightly once on the sheet.
8. Bake for 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and transfer to a cooling rack for 20 minutes.

9. Using a bread knife or other serrated knife, cut the logs at an angle into bars about 1/2 inch thick. (Be careful here; some might crumble if you cut them too thin or too quickly.)

10. Lay cookies back on the cookie sheet on one side. Bake an additional 15 minutes.

11. Turn cookies to their other side and bake 10 more minutes.

12. Allow to cool on wax paper at room temp.

13. Once cool, melt white chocolate in a double broiler or on low heat in the microwave.

14. Drizzle with melted chocolate. Allow drizzle to harden before serving.

These cookies store great in an air tight container for at least a week, if not longer. You could keep them all to yourself and enjoy with your morning coffee...

Or you could dress up some wax paper as wrapping and share. Enjoy!
