THURSDAY, AUGUST 20, 2009, Wind Whipping Up The Sea & Whales Moving Quickly Up Haro Strait
Many people considering whether to go on a whale watching trip to see Orcas don't realize how far Killer Whales travel in an average day: 100 miles or 160 kms. On many days we see different animals in the afternoon from the one that we had seen in the morning.
This can happen because one group or pod of whales may be moving away from us and out of our viewing area for the afternoon, and another might moving towards us and offering a better chance for our passengers.
Today was one of those days. In the early morning we went out West to Race Rocks, then all the way East across Juan de Fuca Strait to San Juan Island. In the afternoon we went East and then North to Turn Point. In the course of 7 hours we covered the full range of our viewing area...and saw Orcas on all three trips!
