SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2009, Afternoon Trip, Mixed Group of J, K & L Killer Whales, plus Harbour Seals
We have always been told by scientists that the Southern Resident Killer Whales are a very tight-knit group with high territorial integrity (i.e. They return to the same feeding grounds year after year, and are very protective of "their space").
These whales typically do not stray too far from their own pods. But today we had a significant split of two groupings of whales, each containing some members of J, K & L pods. Theories of why such mixtures? Socializing, reorganization or just a gathering of efficient fishing parties that work well together?
Stay Tuned.
