L-pod off San Juan Island! May 25th, 2010.
Early this morning Ron Bates of the Marine Mammal Research Group (MMRG), received a report of at least 3 Orcas being sighted near Eagle Point. At first the Orcas were reported as Transient Orcas, including T40 who had been in the area the day before. However, an hour before we departed on our 2pm tour it was confirmed that we had in fact got members of L-pod off the west side of San Juan Island:)
Both our vessels headed out full of eager passengers and crew excited to get a glimpse of Resident (fish eating) Orcas and we were not to be disappointed! When we arrived on scen we could see that the Orcas were in a close group and in resting mode. Resting mode is one of the most incredible behaviors to observe as the Orcas surface and dive in almost complete precision.
We did see some fishing behavior and a couple of Spyhops as well whilst the Orcas slowly made their way south East!
It was great to see L-pod again:)
