Transient Orcas and Pinnipeds in the morning! May 24, 2010.

Here are a few images from our morning encounter with Transient Orcas and various Pinnipeds (Seals & Sealions)!

We were in our final half hour of the trip this morning when a report came over the radio that a large group of Transient (marine Mammal Eaters) Orcas, had been sighted 10 miles south of Oak Bay flats! After checking with the passengers that no one had to be back in the Harbour on time, we made our way as quickly as possible to the Orcas. When we arrived on scene the group was moving steadily in a South East direction and we could see that apart from a number of females we had 3 males including one male identified as T74. T74 is usually seen in Alaskan waters and is a very rare visitor to the Salish Sea.

Apart from the Orcas we also saw Harbor Seals, Northern Elephant Seals, including a large Male, and Steller & California Sealions!

Once again this trip proved you never know what is going to happen when you are out in the Salish Sea:)
