L-pod off San Juan Island! June 20, 2010.

Here are just a few images from today's encounter with L-pod off San Juan Island!

We headed out this afternoon after receiving a report from Ron Bates, MMRG, that L-pod was near False Bay. When we arrived on scene the Orcas were spread out from south of Lime Kiln to Eagle Point and possible some Orcas were even further south! The Orcas were in foraging mode (hunting for Salmon) and we witnessed several Orcas chasing and catching Salmon. As Orcas need approximately 10% of their body weight each day of Salmon, they spend a lot of their time hunting and feeding.

As we watched the Orcas we managed to identify a number of L-pod including L92 "Crewsaver" a male born in 1995, L27 "Ophelia" a female born in 1965, L82 "Kasatka" a female born in 1990 and L55 "Nugget" born in 1977 and the mother of L82.

On our way home we stopped off at Rum Runners and saw a large number of Harbour Seals, Canada Geese with Goslings and a Great Blue Heron.

Our tours at 10am & 2pm also encountered Orcas off San Juan island!

It was another wonderful day on the water:)
