L-pod & Eagles! June 30, 2010.
Here are just a few images from this mornings encounter with members of L-pod, including the L12 sub pod!
We headed out this morning and headed over to False Bay after receiving a report from Ron Bates, MMRG, that members of L-pod had been spotted south of Lime Kiln Lighthouse!
As we arrived on scene we could see two separate groups of L-pod, one just south of Pile Point and the other group a little south of False Bay. We could see a lot of foraging (hunting for Salmon) from various members of L-pod. Marine Naturalist Rachel & I managed to i.d. a number of L-pod including L79 "Skana", L89 "Solstice", L22 "Spirit", L85 "Mystery", L25 "Ocean Sun", L12 "Alexis" and L41 "Mega" along with his sister's L77 "Matia & L94 "Calypso".
We witnessed a couple of breaches and several tail slaps as we sat watching the Orcas travel back and forth. Our closest encounter was by L79 "Skana" who we watched in awe as he chased a Salmon!
On our way home we stopped off in Oak Bay and saw a couple of Bald Eagles as well as Harbor Seals!
What a way to end the month of June and Orca awareness month!
